Elite Advance To Championship At Lightning Cup Tier 1 Showcase

By Exton Elite, 01/17/17, 4:15PM EST

Over MLK weekend, the Exton Elite participated in the Lightning Cup Tier 1 Tournament hosted by the NJ Rockets. The tournament started off nice and early with a 9am game against the host Rockets with the Elite skating to an easy 5-0 victory. Later that day Exton faced off against the Nova Ice Dogs and cruised to another shutout victory, this time by a 3-0 score. Both wins were a total team effort as many of the Elite girls lit the lamp and kudos to Goaltender Ariel Gold for posting back to back shutout vicotries.

Day 2 started with a late afternoon date with Exton's EJEPL rivals the Lady Islanders. After playing the Lady Islanders multiple times throughout the season, the Elite knew their competition well and it showed during a convincing 5-1 victory.  The second game of the day got off to an auspicious start as the game was delayed due to a pulled fire alarm in the arena! When everything got settled down, the Elite went to work against the tough Rochester Monarchs. The game was a constant battle on both ends of the ice. Jess Ciarrocchi got the Elite on the board with a beautiful short-handed goal assisted by Lindsey Coffey. With 2 minutes remaining in the game and the score tied at 1-1 with a member of the Elite in the penalty box, the Monarchs needing a win to advance in the Tournament pulled their goalie and went for the gamble but Exton's Coffey spoiled the party scoring the dagger empty net goal sending Exton Elite into the Championship Game Monday morning.

The Championship Game was exactly as expected with the Tournament's two undefeated teams pitted against each other, Exton Elite and the Northern Cyclones. After a fiercely contested battle and the score standing at 4-3 Cyclones with 6 minutes to play and the Elite on the Power Play the cyclones managed to weather the late onslaught of Exton to procure a 5-3 victory for the Championship. The Elite played another fantastic tournament and once again staked their claim as one of the top teams in the Region.
